What is the educational attainment for Muslim girls in Britain? |
Muslims are among those who experience the highest levels of academic under achievement and lack of qualifications in Britain. About 31% of Muslims of working age have no qualifications (the highest proportion for any religious group). Muslims are the least likely to have degrees. In 2002, the proportion of Muslim children achieving five or more A-C grades in GSCE subjects was lower than for white, Chinese and Indian groups. For example, Pakistanis (40%); Bangladeshi (45%); Indian (64%); Chinese (72%); White (50%). Muslim girls are achieving higher grades than Muslim boys and White boys and are catching up to White girls. The proportion of Muslim children in higher education is slowly increasing. How many Muslim graduates are there in the UK? |
Muslim graduates are a small group in the labour market - there are 150,000 Muslim graduates in GB, representing about 2% of all graduates. Muslim graduates are less likely to be in employment than the average graduate. Their employment rate is 76% compared to an overall graduate rate of 87% - a 12% gap.
There are higher inactivity rates among female Muslim graduates compared with other female graduates and Muslim male graduates. This could be related to cultural issues where female graduates face barriers to employment because of family commitment including childcare which makes it difficult for them to get employment outside the areas they live.
